Digital Consumption and Over-Indebtedness Among Young Adults in Sweden

This LUii report presents empirical results from studies on consumption and over-indebtedness in Swedish young adults in a digital context. The studies have been conducted through in-depth interviews with municipal financial counsellors as well as a quantitative survey with approximately 1,100 respondents in a sample representative of Swedes from 18 to 25 years old. The report includes an extensive literature review on over-indebtedness and consumption in a digital context. The purpose of the project has been to form a better understanding of in what ways the digitization of our everyday lives – including consumption, credit handling and overall communication – influences economic vulnerability among young adults. The research report is written by researchers linked to Lund University Internet Institute (LUii) and has been funded by the Swedish Enforcement Authority. The research has also been conducted in connection with a wider interdisciplinary research theme on ”The Credit Society”, at the Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies at Lund University. The research group is led by Stefan Larsson, Associate Professor in Technology and Social Change, and involves Lupita Svensson, PhD in Social Work, and Hanna Carlsson, PhD in Information Science. The work with the literature review received invaluable help from Fredrik Åström, bibliometrician and Associate Professor at Lund University. Digitalisering i socialt arbete : Socialtjänstens utmaningar och möjligheter

I en tid då tekniska lösningar blir allt vanligare behövs en problematisering av vad digitalisering i socialtjänsten betyder och hur olika verksamheter påverkas. Digitaliseringen väcker reaktioner, både i form av rädslor för att det personliga mötet ska försvinna och förhoppningar om effektiva lösningar för ett mer ekonomiskt, rättvist och mer likriktat beslutsfattande och utförande. Kan digital teknik ersätta det personliga mötet? Är det bättre med en objektiv neutral robot än en subjektiv professionell – och går det ens att skapa en neutral och objektiv robot? Vem ansvarar för robotens beslut? Frågorna är många och komplexa.Digitalisering i socialt arbete ger en introduktion till hur socialtjänstens verksamheter möter digital teknik och visar exempel på hur socialtjänsten digitaliserats. Författaren diskuterar vilka risker och möjligheter som digitaliseringen innebär för socialtjänstens verksamheter, men också hur den framtida utvecklingen kan komma att se ut. Boken tar sin utgångspunkt i praktiknära studier, främst i nationell kontext, och innehåller också diskussionsfrågor för att inspirera till fortsatta samtal. Boken vänder sig både till studenter och yrkesverksamma som kommer i kontakt med eller arbetar inom socialtjänsten och som är nyfikna på interaktionen människa–teknik och framtidens sociala arbete

Automatisering - till nytta eller fördärv?

Automation to benefit or ruin?The purpose of this article is to discuss and analyze how digital automation of the provision of social assistance affects the practice of social work, as part of welfare. Based on interviews with supervisors/project managers and social case workers, who work with social assistance in a strategic selection of municipalities, the opportunities and challenges that robotization brings to the function of social assistance are problematized as a selective welfare right. The results show that robotisation can help to increase efficiency and that resources can be re-prioritized, but at the same time there are significant risks to the erosion of the social work practice, both in terms of the practitioners’ work in the provision of social assistance and its function as a selective right in a universal welfare construction. The results also indicate needs for further in-depth studies
